Individuals interested in a career in outdoor pursuits in the United Kingdom can enroll in an instructor program that ranges in length from 16 to 20 weeks. Students hone their outdoor activity skills, become familiar with methods to instruct others and provide emergency care when necessary.
A complete instructor course includes training in activities such as climbing, kayaking, high ropes courses, white water rafting, skiing, power boating and hiking. Students learn solo and double canoe paddling techniques, rappel down mountains, kayak along rivers and into the open sea, and guide groups through the wilderness. Students also receive instruction in first aid, water hazards, emergency procedures and swift water rescue.
Throughout the program, students work to obtain a variety of awards and certifications, including the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, British Canoe Union (BCU) Level 2 Coach Training, Single Pitch Award in rock climbing and the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handler qualification. Other awards include the Scottish Rafting Association (SRA) Level 1-2 Guide Award, Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Award (SMBLA) and levels one through seven in Snow Sports Awards.
