The Fastest Way to Get a GED in Alabama

For many reasons, high school doesn't work out for everyone. However, the lack of a high school diploma can make finding jobs, or moving on to higher education, very difficult. The Alabama General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certifies that a person has met the educational proficiency standards required of high school graduates. A person with the requisite knowledge can get a GED very quickly. In Alabama, there are no prerequisite conditions to take the test for anyone 18 and older.

      Obtain notarized letter of permission from your parents, and an exit interview report from your former high school, if you are 16 or 17 and attended a public school. If you attended a private school, you only need a notarized letter of permission.

      Visit the Alabama GED testing center nearest you. There are 50 testing centers around the state. Minors need to present their required documents, to complete the registration. As of February 2011, the exam fee is the $50.

      Request accommodations if you have a disability. Eligible conditions include ADHD, a mental health or emotional disorder, learning disability, or physical disability. Testing centers provide assistance to make successful testing possible for every applicant.

      Report to the testing center. The exam is proctored, and you will need to follow all instructions carefully for your exam to be valid. Test takers are allowed to use calculators for the mathematics portion of the exam.

      Receive your pass or fail notice by mail. If you do not pass, consider a GED course, or study further. You only need to retake the sections of the exam you failed. Effective February 2011, retesting fees are $10 per subject area.
