Load the Rosetta Stone Russian disc into your computer. Follow the initial instructions for setup and software installation. Begin learning Russian by starting with level one in which you will learn to associate simple words like "boy" and "girl" by hearing them spoken by a native Russian speaker while seeing matching images.
Complete the level one session by going through four 30-minute lessons within each of the four units that make up level one. Learn simple vocabulary associated with greetings, comparisons and telling time through sensory-based activities. Each unit is capped by a "Milestone," in which you will participate in a simulated conversation reviewing the information in the unit.
Learn about navigating your surroundings and building more vocabulary in level two through more activities and image/audio associations. Level two consists of units five through eight, which will cover Travel, Past and Future, Friends and Social Life, and Dining and Vacation. Complete the Milestone at the end of each unit to move on to the next unit.
Complete units nine through twelve of level three by learning advanced grammar and conversational skills touched on in levels one and two. Units focus on understanding and discussing complicated topics such as religion, politics, opinions and business. Milestones must be completed after each unit.
Plan an extended visit or study abroad session in Russia. Bring along an English-to-Russian dictionary.
Stay in a Russian hostel or with a Russian family rather than at a large hotel. Encourage your hosts to only speak Russian around you even if they speak fluent English.
Make frequent trips to markets and other locations where people gather and interact. Listen to the conversations of the people around you, and try to connect their actions to their words. Interact with locals as you live your daily life in Russia, including purchasing items at markets, eating at restaurants and partaking of local cultural entertainment.
Stay in Russia long enough to speak and write Russian fluently.
