What kind of education did Sam Houston Have?

Sam Houston's education was unconventional and largely self-directed. He didn't attend formal schools for a significant period. He received some early instruction from his mother and a tutor, but his formal schooling was limited and ended when he was around 13 or 14. He was largely self-educated through reading widely and observing the world around him.
