Turn on the radio and look for French-language channels. Listen to the radio at least an hour a day and write down words that you did not understand. Look up those words in a dictionary.
Watch short French videos online on video sharing sites such as Youtube or Vimeo. Most of these sites have French videos with subtitles that will help you improve your French if you are out of practice.
Read French newspapers and books. Keep a list of the words you do not recognize and translate them using a dictionary.
Translate French text into English on your own without any online help. Once you have finished your translation, go online and check your work on a site such as Google Translate and compare your translation to the one generated.
Review the lists of words that you did not recognize when listening to the radio or watching videos. Study the dictionary regularly, at least once a day for half an hour to learn new words.
