The New York Public Library offers ESL classes on weekdays at six branch libraries. Selection for the limited number of seats in these free classes is by lottery, so be sure to register before the deadline. You will take a placement test before classes start and you will be placed in the appropriate level. The classes are designed for learners at a low or intermediate level. Classes begin three times a year: mid-September, January, and early April.
The Adult and Continuing Education divisions of Lehman College and Bronx Community College offer ESL classes on weekdays in the Bronx. Students can attend the Lehman program full time or part time. In addition to managing the nation's largest public school district, the New York City Board of Education also has a division of continuing education which offers a variety of courses leading to a high school equivalency diploma, career and technical education, and ESL. Classes are offered at nine different locations throughout the Bronx. The classes are taught by certified teachers and they are free of charge. The City University of New York offers 25 hour-per-week language immersion classes for students who have been accepted to a CUNY campus. In the Bronx, this program is offered at Bronx Community College and Hostos Community College. The CUNY Language Immersion Program emphasizes academic skills, particularly reading and writing.
