How to Be Better at Math As an Adult

Of all the fundamental academic subjects, math is the most difficult to learn. Children and adults alike struggle with math. Though adults may not need nearly as many math skills in everyday life as their high school math teachers tried to convince them they would, many adults still do not feel comfortable with their response time when posed simple mathematical queries. If you want to boost your math skills, make practicing math an everyday part of your life.

Instructions

Determine which areas of math trouble you. You may have addition, subtraction and multiplication down pat, but get flustered when presented with division problems. Alternatively, you may want to work on your familiarity with numbers in general. Regardless, state the goal you want to accomplish.

Look for that category of math in your everyday life. Identifying what causes you trouble and when will allow you to devise the best plan for tackling the obstacle head-on.

    • 3

Force yourself to confront the troubling math. When something is difficult or time-consuming, people are likely to avoid it when possible. Do not allow yourself to avoid doing the math. The only way you are going to improve your skills is to force yourself to do it. Review your bills line-by-line, calculate payment schedules, or refresh your familiarity with your salary, benefits and savings. Do the math in your life that must be done. Make yourself do math every day, whether it's critical or elective.

Eliminate the cheats that allow you to avoid math. Stop using a calculator to add or subtract just two numbers. Use brainpower to figure out how much a coupon will save while shopping or how much to tip a waiter. Only use a calculator after you have done mental math, when you want to check your answers.

Make math a recreational activity. Math may not sound like fun, especially if you struggle with it. However, including it in your life as a simple, pleasurable way to pass idle minutes waiting in line or anywhere else will further increase your comfort level with the subject. Work on the Sudoku puzzle in the newspaper each morning or add a couple of math game applications to your cellphone or PDA. Your brain is like a muscle -- you need to exercise it to keep it in shape. Do a little math every day to regain comfort with numbers as a whole.
