Place a chip of bone into the table-mounted vise. Make sure the edges of the vise are touching the outer edges of the bone with the broadest part of the chip facing upward.
Trace a symbol of a rune on the center of the bone using a pencil. Use a rune guide to help you draw the symbols.
Use the hand engraver tool and firmly hold it in place at a medium setting. Repeatedly move the tool over the design you traced until the bone gives way beneath the tip of the tool.
Repeat Steps 1 through 3 with as many bone pieces you need for a complete set of runes.
Anchor the bone disc into the table-mounted vise. Make sure it is evenly in place with the broadest side facing upward.
Select a stencil of a design small enough to fit in the center of the disc. Designs such as flower outlines or letters for personalized engravings work well for this.
Transfer the stencil onto the face of the bone disc with a pencil.
Hold the engraver steadily and firmly in your hand and press the tip of it on part of the drawing as a starting point. Turn the engraver on to a medium setting.
Trace over the design several times until the bone gives way. Trace over it some more until the design is engraved. Drill a small hole directly above the engraved design so that it can be worn on a cord around your neck.
