How to Write a Letter to Your Future Freshman Roommate

Roommates are a part of the college experience, and while you can request a specific person, you are not always guaranteed a friend. Before college begins, write your future roommate a letter telling her a little about yourself, such as your likes and dislikes. You should be completely honest, yet friendly, in the letter so she can get a feel for you before you meet one other. By telling her about your preferences up front, and requesting hers in return, there will be no surprises when you meet on moving day.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce yourself in the letter. Tell your roommate your name, nickname, age, hometown and area of study.

    • 2

Go into detail about your personal life. Give the roommate information about your family and how you live your day-to-day life. Write about your favorite activities and your hobbies.

    • 3

Explain your personality traits and habits that may indicate what type of roommate you will be. For example, let the roommate know if you are messy, when and where you typically study and whether you are a party animal or a home body.

    • 4

Write about your expectations of a roommate. Your feelings regarding guest visits may be a topic to discuss.

    • 5

Give your contact information to your future roommate, in case he wants to write you back. Write your address, phone number and email information at the end of the letter, and request a letter back from him.
