What is in Italian?

Italian, a Romance language, is the official language of Italy and Switzerland (one of four). It is spoken by around 64.5 million native speakers in Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, Vatican City, and parts of Slovenia and Croatia, and by a further 12.5 million people worldwide as a first or second language. It is the native language of the majority of the population in Italy and Switzerland, and the fifth-most widely spoken Romance language in the world.

Italian has a long history, dating back to the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire. It began to develop as a distinct language in the 10th century, when the first Italian literary works were written. The language has since undergone several changes, most notably the addition of the definite article and the loss of the vocative case.

Today, Italian is a rich and expressive language with a large vocabulary. It is used in a wide variety of literary genres, including poetry, prose, drama, and journalism. Italian is also the language of music, art, and philosophy.
