Italian, a Romance language, is the official language of Italy and one of the official languages of Switzerland, San Marino, and Vatican City. It is historically, culturally, and geographically related to several surrounding languages, including, in particular, the Gallo-Italic and Rheto-Romance languages of northern Italy, the Occitano-Romance languages of southern France, and the Gallo-Romance languages of Romania, France and Wallonia in southern Belgium.
