Who usually received a formal education in ancient Athenian society?

In ancient Athenian society, a formal education was typically received by freeborn males. While girls from wealthy families might receive some education at home, it was far less structured and comprehensive than that of boys. Slaves and metics (foreign residents) generally did not receive formal education.
