Transition Issues for College Freshmen

Transitioning from high school to college can be an exciting time in a student's life. However, many students face challenges during this period. Adjusting to the freedom of college can be challenging for freshmen. New students might also be subject to challenges like trying to stick to a proper diet, binge drinking and maintaining emotional health.
  1. Navigating Freedom

    • Many new college students are overwhelmed by the amount of freedom that they have now that they are on their own. When it comes to academics, students are able to pick their courses and professors, set their own study schedule and decide whether they will attend class. Outside of the classroom, students are able to explore the world around them like never before. That freedom can be both exciting and challenging. Finding balance and developing a new structure is important.

    Freshman 15: Myth Or Reality?

    • Access to junk food and alcohol, while neglecting exercise and feeling stress are all factors that can contribute to weight gain for college freshmen. However, according to a 2008 article in the journal "Obesity," while many college freshmen gain weight, the vast majority do not gain significant weight. As a part of successfully transitioning to college, it is important for freshmen to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, getting regular sleep and exercise, and managing stress.

    Managing Alcohol Use

    • Alcohol use -- specifically binge drinking -- is common among college freshmen. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks on one occasion. According to a 2007 article published in the journal "Addictive Behaviors," 42 percent of first-year students report binge drinking. Finding a way to manage the pressure to drink alcohol is important for students transitioning to college. Parental intervention and screening for behaviors linked to binge drinking can be factors in prevention.

    Managing Emotional Health

    • A 2010 study conducted by UCLA found college freshmen struggling with their emotional health in record numbers. Finances, disabilities, psychological disorders, as well as high expectations for success contribute to declining emotional health among college freshmen. Prioritizing tasks, planning ahead and taking time to relax are all ways college freshmen can manage stress.
