What was one cause of womens subordination in nineteenth century America was?

Coverture

Under the common law doctrine of coverture, a married woman's legal existence was subsumed by that of her husband. This meant that she could not own property in her own name, make contracts, or sue or be sued in court. She was also legally obligated to obey her husband, and he could physically discipline her if she did not.
