The Purpose of Pledging a Fraternity

When entering college, students are likely to be met with a variety of new experiences and opportunities in which they can participate. One opportunity for young men in college is joining a fraternity. There are many reasons to pledge a fraternity, and most members will find that these benefits will continue long after they graduate from college. Pledging allows potential members to get to know the fraternity and its members to ensure a proper fit, as your membership affiliation is for life.
  1. Academics

    • One of the purposes of pledging a fraternity is to benefit from its upheld standards of academics. Fraternities emphasize scholastic achievement from their members. Many fraternities even offer awards for academic achievement, and sometimes scholarships are given to members for their achievements. These standards encourage fraternity members to live up to their academic potential to the best of their abilities.

    Social Development

    • There is also a social aspect of pledging a fraternity that members find beneficial. Being a member of a fraternity involves cooperation with other members. They work together to maintain the good standing and uphold the legacy of the fraternity. Beyond the boundaries of the fraternity, membership also typically includes socializing and cooperation with sororities and other fraternities on campus.

    Philanthropy

    • Another purpose of pledging a fraternity is the opportunity to participate in philanthropic events and endeavors. Fraternities generally expect their members to become involved in a charitable event or successfully complete a certain number of hours taking part in community service projects. This charitable participation encourages admirable life skills.

    Campus Involvement

    • In addition to philanthropic opportunities, fraternity members have the opportunity to participate in events around campus. Fraternities generally encourage members to take an active role in campus activities. This participation is a great way to meet new people, explore other student organizations and leave a lasting mark on campus.

    Building Lasting Relationships

    • A final purpose of pledging a fraternity is the opportunity to build lasting relationships. Not only do members establish lasting friendships with one another, but they also have the opportunity to meet a constantly growing network of alumni who may be helpful when making the transition from college to the working world.
