Purposes of a Fraternity in College

A fraternity is an association of men at the college level who are linked by a common interest. To become a member of a fraternity, pledges must go through rush week, where they're introduced to and voted on by established members. Fraternities offer many benefits to members, both during and after college, and while partying together is a fraternity tradition, "Animal House" is not representative of most of today's fraternities.

After graduation, fraternity members may also be able to use alumi connections to gain employment. As fraternity brothers begin to establish themselves in their careers, they may be able to improve career opportunities for each other.

    • The purpose of many fraternities is to allow members to help improve the community while in college. Fraternities may require members to volunteer with charitable organizations to assist those in need. Many fraternities also hold fundraisers for local organizations and may work in association with other fraternities to raise money. Not only does helping charitable organizations help people, it provides a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction among members.

    Academic Support

    • Academics is also heavily emphasized in many fraternities around the country. Most fraternties encourage scholastic achievement for members and support students through tutoring, counseling and study hours.
