How to Start Dorm Roommate Relationships

When you mention the phrase "dorm life," a vision of wild parties and loud music probably pops into your mind. In reality it is an important part of that critical first year at college to establish a good relationship with your roommate. This relationship can be deep, since each student is facing being away from home for the first time, experiencing real responsibility and making important life decisions.

Instructions

    • 1

Form a relationship with your roommates before school begins. Colleges provide contact information so friendships can form before roommates meet. Discuss who is bringing a TV, stereo, toaster oven, refrigerator and other household items. You both need to bring an alarm clock with snooze.

    • 2

Arrange the dorm room together and make plans for decorating or adding accessories. Maybe you need to build a loft to add floor space.

    • 3

Find things you have in common, such as your majors, religious beliefs, sports or other activities. Have fun sharing common interests and appreciate each other's differences.

    • 4

Schedule classes at the same times so you both have a better chance of going and can study together.

    • 5

Set some rules and boundaries but expect conflict to still arise between roommates. It's in your best interest to work it out. Discussion topics might include drinking, dating, cleaning and studying.

    • 6

Spend time together away from your college dorm room studying, eating, exercising or having fun.
