You're bound to get hungry after the dining hall closes. Buy a small cabinet for keeping snacks, a few canned goods, condiments and coffee. Stack it atop a mini-fridge, where you'll store soft drinks and milk for breakfast. Get a coffeemaker so you can have a cup while getting ready for classes and a microwave for heating up leftovers. You'll also need a can opener, a small set of cutlery, a few mugs and glasses and plastic containers for storing food.
Once you get tired of studying, you'll need something to do. Buy a small TV and mount it in a corner. Hook up a DVD player and work with your hallmates to compile a DVD library (put your name on yours!). Buy a used video game console and a few games to go with it; it's an excellent way to meet new friends. Stock up on board games for late-night tournaments and get a deck of cards for an impromptu poker game. For outdoor fun, don't forget your bike helmet and sleeping bag.
Your college likely won't provide much beyond a bed, desk and dresser, so you'll need more to make a real home away from home. Purchase an inexpensive futon and a few throw cushions for lounging. Buy a bean bag and throw it in the corner. Cut the harsh overhead lighting and replace it with lamps and Christmas lights. Spread a plush rug on the floor. Hang posters on the walls. Buy several photo frames and fill them with favorite pictures. Don't forget to buy bedding, many dorm beds are size twin XL.
Stock up on your favorite bath products before moving in so you won't have to shop for a while. If your dorm room has its own bathroom, buy a matching rug, shower curtain and toilet seat cover. You'll also need cleaning products, a toilet brush and mop. If you share a bathroom with the hall, you'll need a shower caddy, a soap container and small bottles of shampoo and shower gel, along with a pair of flip-flops and a bathrobe.
