It's important not to disturb your roommate while she's studying or sleeping. If she's studying for a test, keep the television or radio down. If you come home in the middle of the night from a party, don't wake up your roommate by turning on the lights and cranking up the music.
Respect your roommate's belongings. Don't borrow her clothes without asking, and don't eat her snacks that you see on the computer table. If she notices that you respect her belongings, she is more likely to respect yours.
While some colleges prohibit sexual activity in dorm rooms, others allow it. Many schools, however, forbid engaging in sexual activity when a roommate is in the room. If you engage in sexual activity while your roommate is present, you make her feel uncomfortable.
Most living situations don't work out if there isn't honesty and open communication. If your roommate does something you don't like, be honest with her. Ignoring the problem only makes things worse. For example, if she doesn't keep her part of the room clean, say, "I'm upset that you haven't been keeping your part of the room clean. I think it's important for both of us to keep the dorm room tidy."
It's never a good idea to gossip about your roommate. Even if she said or did something to bother you, it's best not to share it with other people. If she finds out that you have been talking about her behind her back, things might get hostile between the two of you.
