How to Develop a Study System

Each person has a special way of studying. Some methods are effective and others fail to help the student achieve academic excellence. To find a method that works well for you, learn to take general techniques that produce positive results and create a unique study system that helps you manage time and develop organizational skills.

Create a schedule that works for you. A schedule is valuable because the act of managing your time actually helps you save it. The key is to ensure that time allotted for studying is when you're typically rested and alert. Set study time at least 30 to 90 minutes after a meal and allow 30 minutes without studying before going to sleep. Schedule a time during the day to study material that requires a great deal of concentration.

    • 2

Choose a place to study. The environment must be free from distractions and conducive to studying.

    • 3

Use a technique such as SQ3R to help manage your study skills and make the most of your study time. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. Be active when you study by asking yourself questions as you read material and review your notes. See Additional Resources for more information on various study techniques that can help you create a strategy that works for you.

    • 4

Study for 20 to 50 minutes and then take a break for up to 10 minutes. You can retain more information if you study for short periods and then take a break. Use the time to move away for the study area and reflect on the material.

    • 5

Be flexible and allow for revisions to your schedule when necessary. Although you need to commit to studying daily, realize that you can revise your schedule as the need arises.
