Types of Self Defense Classes

Violence against women, children and all citizens minding their own lives is something that everyone should rail against. Unfortunately, the best that most of us can do is learn to defend ourselves against those who may--for whatever nefarious reason--try to cause us harm. Courses are designed for any skill level or experience as victims of violence of participants.
  1. Padded Attacker Class

    • Padded attacker self-defense training was developed in 1971 to train SWAT team members. The class teaches setting verbal boundaries and striking skills in a controlled setting. Eventually, class members will put their newly learned skills to the test by working with a multi-layered and helmet-wearing assailant, which protects them from the full-on self-defense techniques that class members are asked to use.

    Traditional Martial Arts Training

    • Traditional martial arts styles include Karate, Kung Fu, Jujitsu and Tai Chi. These classes teach balance, blocking, breaking holds, and striking in a calm manner. Martial arts disciplines require mental focus, as well as physical focus and stamina.

    Fitness Kickboxing Training

    • Your self-defense training may be as simple as heading to your local gym for a rousing kickboxing class. These are not purporting to be anything more than fitness classes, but they do provide good cardiovascular training, muscular fitness, agility and striking practice in a safe setting. If you approach the class with an eye toward possibly having to use the training on a different level at some point, you can call upon it if you are ever in a dangerous situation. Remember the confidence you feel in the class, remain calm and take your chance to run, if it is presented in the situation.

    Common Objects Self-Defense Training

    • Your keys are sharp and can be used to at least make a minimal dig into your assailant, at least enough to startled him or her. This type of class, usually a part of a larger self-defense class, teaches you to look for protection from simple and easily accessible objects. Stones or stone-like objects, aerosol sprays, pens, pencils and knitting needles are just a handful of basic objects that can be turned into self-protection weapons. You can even use your cell phone as a missile, after you've dialed 911, of course.
