How to Cope With the Death of a Classmate

Coping with the death of a classmate can be very difficult. Losing a friend, whether it is sudden or expected, requires time and compassion from which to recover. You may need to take time away from your studies. However, it is important to remember that even though you bad now, you will recover.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow yourself to grieve. Whether your classmate was a close friend or an acquaintance, you are entitled to feel like you have lost someone close to you. Well-run classes often involve everyone and encourage the students to function like a large family, which can make losses feel even more severe.

    • 2

Make an effort to see other people. Isolating yourself will intensify the grief and sadness you feel, so speak to people every day. A phone call or quick visit to a friend or family member can make all the difference to how well you handle the situation, and it will temporarily boost your mood.

    • 3

Write down how you feel in a journal or paint a picture. Being creative is healing, and most people find that writing down their thoughts and feelings on paper can be very therapeutic.

    • 4

Talk to your teacher and explain how you feel. Colleges and schools have processes that will support you and keep your grades from suffering while you recover.

    • 5

Meet with other classmates. Don't be tempted to cut yourself off from everyone, as your classmates will be going through the same thing. You will be able to help each other through grieving and remembering, so arrange to meet and talk to each other.
