Occidental College has both men's and women's varsity basketball teams and 19 other varsity teams. The Occidental Tigers compete in both NCAA Division III and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), of which they're a founding member. The college itself is a small, private liberal arts college in Los Angeles. President Barack Obama attended the college for two years before transferring to Columbia University.

The University of California at Santa Cruz competes as an independent member of the NCAA Division III. The university offers both a men's and women's varsity basketball teams and 10 other varsity sports. UCSC is the only NCAA Division III school in the University of California system. In 2002, it received an award for having one of the Top 10 graduation rates for Division III student-athletes. The school's mascot is the Banana Slug, a bright yellow slug found in the redwood forests surrounding Santa Cruz.

Claremont-McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College and Scripps College compete as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team. The colleges are members of the SCIAC and NCAA Division III conferences and offer men's and women's varsity basketball teams. The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps team is the only team in the SCIAC that has won a conference title in each sport sponsored by the SCIAC, including men's and women's basketball.
