Federal Grants for Online Schooling

The federal government gives out grants to students, both traditional and online, who want to continue their education at accredited schools. Unlike loans, the federal grants do not have to be paid back, and, depending on the grant, they may be reapplied for yearly. All students must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine their federal grant eligibility.
  1. Federal Pell Grant

    • The Federal Pell Grant is available to students who attend online universities and colleges. The amount awarded depends on whether you are studying full- or part-time. If you are attending school, even online, you may be eligible to receive the grant if you are working toward earning your first bachelor's degree. This is a need-based grant.

    Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

    • This need-based grant is awarded to students attending school online or in the traditional classroom. The amount varies, depending on your need, your enrollment status and availability of funds allotted to your university or college. If you qualify for the Federal Pell Grant, you will be considered for the this grant.

    Academic Competitiveness Grant

    • The Academic Competiveness Grant is awarded to high school seniors entering the freshman year of college, or college freshmen moving on to their sophomore year of college. You must also be a Federal Pell Grant recipient. This grant is available to students attending online colleges or universities, as long as the college or university is an accredited two- or four-year school. Other requirements include having "completed a rigorous secondary school program of study" and, if you're going into your second year of college, having a minimum 3.0 GPA.

    TEACH Grant

    • The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant is available to students online or in traditional classrooms who plan to teach in public or private elementary and secondary schools serving low-income families. You must meet certain academic requirements, such as a 3.25 cumulative GPA. You do not need to show a great financial need in order to receive this grant. You must fill out the FAFSA and sign a TEACH agreement to serve in order to receive the grant.

    National SMART Grant

    • The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study (or fifth year of a five-year program) to students eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in specific math, science, technology or certain liberal arts programs. You must maintain a culumlative 3.0 GPA in the work required for your major.
