How to Find Information on the Lives of Colonial Women of European Descent

The lives and roles of colonial women of European descent mirrored the conservative mindset of the society they lived in between the 1600s and 1700s. Since the Puritans believed in a patriarchal family unit and society, the women during this time were required to be subject to their husbands, bear children and perform domestic duties. However, there were some cases of egalitarianism in colonial America. Single women often worked as teachers or caretakers, and some women even conducted business outside of the home.
