How to Number Appendices in a Research Project

An appendix is the optional section of an academic or professional research paper that contains additional information which was not included in the body of the paper. Illustrations, graphs, tables and any other supplementary information not essential to the paper are examples of items often included in the appendices section. The numbering of appendices is the same for all format styles, including the most common formats such as MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association).

Instructions

    • 1

Create an "Appendices" section at the end of your research paper after the "References" section. The section should have "Appendices" typed in the heading of the first page.

    • 2

Read through your research project to identify the locations where the appendices are necessary. For example, following a statement regarding exact numbers or figures, a chart demonstrating the origin or source of these numbers or figures is a helpful addition.

    • 3

Type "(See Appendix I)" immediately following the statement pertaining to the numbers or figures. All appendices must be numbered using Roman numerals, in order of appearance in the project.

    • 4

Place the item you would like as "Appendix I" first in the "Appendices" section. All the appendices must be ordered numerically, following the flow of the project.

    • 5

Continue throughout the paper numbering and adding information to the "Appendices" section in the same manner. Your research paper can include as many appendices as needed; however, each appendix should only include one set of data.
