How to Memorize Fast and Remember More

Increasing your memory skills can help you memorize faster and remember more things. A better memory can help you to more quickly recall names, facts, dates, historical events, speeches and other data. Repetition is the key to improving and retaining your memory skills. Think of the brain as a muscle that needs to be worked. If you don't keep your brain flexible, your mental agility declines. There are several techniques you can use to help you memorize things fast and remember more material.

Instructions

    • 1

Make connections with what you already know to memorize quickly. Connect new material to old material. Figure out how test material relates to something familiar to you and talk about it out loud. Make observations out loud such as, "Oh, that cell looks like hard candy" or "the trajectory has to be like a basketball shot."

    • 2

Visualize the concept to memorize fast and remember more. Picture the item you wish to remember. Imagine what it looks like.To memorizing a fact for a test, draw it in a chart or diagram or picture. You will be able to remember the diagram or picture better than a paragraph of explanation. When memorizing a speech, draw a symbol beside each point or major move in your outline or manuscript.

    • 3

Repeat the material out loud to memorize faster. Recite facts, material and speeches outloud, referring to notes when you have to. Repeat the material until you can do it completely from memory without error. You learn more quickly when you produce something yourself.

Reproduce the material in writing, pictures or symbols if you are a visual learner. It won't hurt you to hear the material or to reproduce it out loud, but it may be more helpful to write it and see it. Make your own flashcards out of 3-by-5-inch note cards to review them at your leisure. You memorize faster the more you repeat all of these processes.

Compose catchy puns and phrases. String together familiar sounds, especially if learning foreign languages or unfamiliar vocabulary words. Come up with a sentence that makes you laugh, but helps you remember the meaning.
