How to Write a College-Level Research Paper

Most students dread writing long research papers for their college classes. Most of the stress, however, usually comes from procrastination. Follow the steps below to learn how to stay on task and write a great college-level research paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Start writing your paper early. This is the most important step! Do not wait until the week before it is due. Start the next step as soon as you receive the assignment.

    • 2

Write a rough outline of what you want to write about. Include at least all the major sections of your paper. You may want to go down to the paragraph level in your outline, depending on how detailed you want to be. The more detailed your outline is, the easier it will be to write the actual paper.

    • 3

Make a schedule for completing your paper. Include the time you spent writing an outline, as well as future time for gathering information, writing, and reviewing with friends and professors. Divide the schedule to correspond with the major sections of your paper, and tailor the schedule depending on how much time you have and the length of the paper. For example, you may need a day or a week to write a certain section, depending on the length of the paper.

    • 4

Gather your necessary sources. Use the Internet to increase your understanding and get background information. Use libraries to find books and concrete sources for your research.

    • 5

Write according to your schedule. Because you started early and created a detailed schedule, you should only have to write a small amount each day.

    • 6

Reread and revise your paper often.

    • 7

Ask your professor for help as often as necessary. This not only helps you and your writing, but also leaves a good impression on the professor who will be grading your paper. Incorporate your professor's suggestions and it will probably help your grade.

    • 8

Have a knowledgeable friend read the final draft of your paper. At some universities, the English Department will proofread and review your papers for you.

    • 9

Turn in your paper when you have worked out all the final issues. Your professor should already have seen it several times, so you shouldn't be nervous.
