About Self Assessment for Students

Self-assessments are quizzes students take to assess their academic weaknesses and strengths. The assessments also help students determine what careers they might be interested in.
  1. Functions

    • Students complete self-assessments that ask for information about their learning style, if they enjoy reading, what are their strongest and weakest subjects, what are their career goals and why they chose that career. The assessments can be multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank.

    Types

    • The type of self-assessments students take depends on the person giving them but some examples include those that are academic-oriented, career-oriented and sometimes personality-oriented.

    Misconceptions

    • Self-assessments are not substitutes for meeting with your career counselor or professor to discuss your academic and career goals. They're aware of the work you've done in the past and can give you an honest opinion.

    Fun Facts

    • Some self-assessments have fun questions such as what do you do for fun, what organizations do you volunteer with or trivia-related questions

    Considerations

    • When doing a self-assessment, be honest in your answers and think of the areas where you need improvement. For example, you may find you're strong in the sciences so you might consider a career in medicine. But you may need to improve in English composition.
