How to Become an Online Community College Instructor

Online education, also known as distance learning, is popular not just for students, but for teachers too. Becoming an online community college instructor can afford you with some of the same geographical and time flexibility that your students have.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain an advanced degree in your field. Community colleges will want you to be knowledgeable about your subject and require that you have a master's degree or a PhD in your field. Some colleges accept an advanced degree in a field related to the subjects you are teaching.

    • 2

Gain teaching experience or work experience in your field. While work experience is not a universal requirement, teaching or work experience make you a desirable candidate. In addition, many community colleges do not specifically advertise online teaching positions, but offer them to adjuncts already working at one of their physical locations. Thus, working at a physical location first will put you at a huge advantage for the job that you want.

    • 3

Surf the web for online teaching opportunities. As of 2011, Chancellor University, University of Phoenix, Ashford University and St. Joseph's College of Maine all offer opportunities for teaching online.

    • 4

Type the name of the college that you are interested in applying to along with the word "employment," in a search engine. Doing so often takes you right to the web pages that show job availability.

    • 5

Click on the job you're interested in and fill out an online application, if applicable.

    • 6

Interview for the position. If the college deems you a good candidate for the job, they may request phone interviews and additional correspondence as part of the interview process.
