Top Law Schools on the East Coast

Each year, U.S. News & World Report releases its rankings of the top law schools in the United States. The 2010 version of the rankings, which was released in April 2009, three of the top four national law schools were located on the east coast. In order, these schools are Yale, Harvard and Columbia. Stanford, the only West coast school in the top four, earned the third overall ranking, placing it between Harvard and Columbia.

    • Regarded as the nation's top law school, Yale annually produces some of the brightest legal minds to enter the workforce each year. Admission into Yale is extremely selective. Admitted students in 2009 possessed a median grade point average of 3.90 and had a middle 50 percent LSAT score range from 169 to 177.

    Harvard Law School

    • Located just outside Boston in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard Law School is esteemed with a global reputation of excellence. Students at the school can select from a vast abundance of course offerings, which allows to students to study material and subjects not found at some other institutions. Graduates of Harvard Law School primarily matriculate to New York City, Massachusetts or California, with an overall bar passage rate of nearly 95 percent. Students admitted to Harvard Law School possess a median grade point average of 3.88 and middle 50 percent LSAT score of 170 to 176.

    Columbia University

    • Ranked as the fourth best law school in the nation, Columbia University School of Law offers a unique and diverse legal education experience. With 28 percent of students recognized as American minorities and an additional nine percent of students from foreign nations, Columbia's approach to a legal education is not only focused on the American legal system but also takes an international approach as well. A high proportion of graduates often opt to stay in corporate or finance law in New York City, although alumni can be found in all areas of the legal field. Admitted students to Columbia possess a median grade point average of 3.71 and a middle 50 percent LSAT score of 170 to 175.
