Classes in anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry and microbiology are mandatory at virtually every nursing school before application. Even if a school does not require them, the classes will provide the essential background needed to complete higher-level nursing classes.
Other schools may request a sociology and an entry-level college English course. Check with the school's admission counselor for specific class requirements.
Most schools require Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) CPR certification before entering nursing school. The certification is necessary before establishing any patient contact in a health-care setting. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association offer BLS classes.
Make sure you have the appropriate equipment for nursing clinical rotations. All nursing students will need an adult-sized stethoscope. If a student wants to pursue pediatric or neonatal care, they will also want to buy the appropriate-sized stethoscopes to accommodate these patient groups.
Students might want to invest in a blood pressure cuff, scissors, a watch that tells military time, tuning fork, pen light and reflex hammer to use during clinical rotations and physical assessment courses.
A health-care provider will need to perform a physical exam to ensure that students do not present a health concern to yourself and patients. Immunizations must be up-to-date and submitted to the school.
