Chlorine dioxide is a chemical compound that is a mixture of two chemical elements, and has the formula ClO2. It exists in the form of a yellowish-green gas, and at certain temperatures, this gas crystallizes as orange crystals -- typically around -59 °C. ClO2 is used chiefly in starch, soap, flour, and in water purification and paper bleaching. Chlorine dioxide is an explosive gas, therefore caution must be taken before handling the compound. Chlorine dioxide can also be very hard on the stomach and can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Due to its unstable nature, it needs to be prepared immediately before use.
