How to Memorize the Bones in the Body

Nurses, doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists and people in other occupations dealing with the body should have a working knowledge of the skeletal system. The skeletal system gives the human body its shape, protects it from injury, allows for movement, produces blood and stores minerals. An adult skeleton has 206 different bones and memorization is key to understanding the skeletal system's wide range of uses. Although the number of bones can be intimidating to memorize, its possible by using a variety of study methods or just one that best suits your study style.

Instructions

    • 1

Read over a chart of the skeletal system a couple of times to familiarize yourself with the names and locations of bones. Try to create mnemonic devices to aid in memory. For example Doctors Lounge recommends "Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle" to memorize the carpal bones. This translates to Scaphoid, Lunate, Triquetral, Pisiform, Trapezium, Trapezoid, Capitate and Hamate.

    • 2

Write the name of each bone on one side of a flash card with the location on the other side. Study the flashcards until you are thoroughly familiar with the names and locations. Drawing the bones on the flashcard can also be helpful.

    • 3

Play computer games for an interactive approach to memorization. Free internet games are located in the resources section.

    • 4

Test yourself by printing or copying blank diagrams of the skeletal system. Go through the skeleton and label every bone. Keep reviewing and testing yourself until you have correctly labeled all of the bones in the body.
