Firefighter Training Schools

A firefighter is responsible for protecting citizens, wildlife and structures from different types of fires. Whether you are a paid or volunteer firefighter, you must obtain the proper training to pursue a career in this field. Both private and governmental schools offer training to new firefighters, but you must contact the school for the latest course offerings and schedules.
  1. Training Division

    • Training Division -- a provider of online fire certification and EMT training in the United States and Canada -- offers a Basic Firefighter course for working professionals through its online Fire Academy and EMT training program. The course covers all the necessary classes to satisfy the State Firemen's and Fire Marshals' Association of Texas (SFFMA) requirements. You can learn at your own pace and submit classwork to your professor online. After you complete the program, you will be eligible for the Basic Firefighter Certification.

    Greater St. Louis County Fire Academy, Inc.

    • The Greater St. Louis County Fire Academy, Inc. is a nonprofit institution that works with the St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission. The school offers firefighter training for firefighters in the St. Louis County, Missouri, region. It offers three new recruit firefighter classes per year, and coursework includes fire behavior, safety, building construction and fire equipment. Students must also take part in an eight-hour orientation, which teaches the basic setup and procedures of a fire department. Certain required gear is not included in the tuition price.

    California Regional Fire Academy

    • The California Regional Fire Academy has a certification program in different firefighting fields, including auto extrication, fire control, firefighting training and hazmat. For example, The Firefighter Type 1 Training teaches you about fire communications and tactical decision making. You will receive fire line reference materials, and after completing the program, you will receive a National Wildlife Coordinating Group (NWCG) Certificate. The Rescue Systems I course teaches you how to work with a team and use rescue equipment such as ropes, pulley systems and belaying tools. After completing the Rescue System I course, you will receive a State Fire Training Certificate.

    Washington State Fire Training Academy

    • The Washington State Patrol's Washington State Fire Training Academy trains private and public emergency response and firefighting personnel. You must stay at the academy during training. You must bring your own bedding and toiletries. This school is for new recruits, and it shows them how to properly use firefighting equipment. You learn about fire safety and take part in real firefighter simulations, where you have to extinguish a burning car or material.
