A basic cosmetology project that you can design will show off your skills to your instructors. Create a list of the 10 most common haircuts currently popular. Then, get 10 volunteers. Cut each person's hair according to the hairstyle list you have made. Take photographs of the front and back of each person's hair. Mount the photographs on paper and write up some information about each of the haircuts and the procedure you used to do them. Present everything in a binder or portfolio.
Many cosmetologists are asked to do something that sounds difficult: to cut a balding man's hair so it looks thicker, or to thin out a women's hair to make it lighter without losing the length. Figure out a challenge you want to try. Come up with at least five ways you can meet the challenge and outline the steps. Then, find volunteers and take the challenge with their help. Take "before" and "after" pictures. Add information to create a portfolio showing how you have met that challenge.
Home makeovers and personal makeovers are all the rage when it comes to reality television, so create a project based around makeovers. Ask for three volunteers who would like to have their look totally made over. Take "before" pictures of your volunteers. Design three distinct styles for them, including hair, makeup and nail design. Perform the makeovers and take "after" pictures. Outline the steps that you took for the makeovers. Include the photographs and your design plans in a portfolio and present it to your teacher.
