  1. Tennessee Technology Center

    • The Tennessee Technology Center at Memphis prepares student to enter the state's workforce via traditional classrooms and distance learning. Its 24 program include automotives, welding, truck driving, nursing, avionic, dental assisting, masonry, cosmetology, barbering and laboratory technology.

      Qualified applicants must be at least 18 years old and have either high school diplomas or GEDs. Select programs have additional requirements. Applicants to health programs must score at least a 51 percent on the reading and 42 percents on the math portions of the Nursing Entrance Exam, undergo a physical examination, submit references and attend an orientation.

      Applicants to the truck-driver program have to be at least 21 with a valid driver's license, have no more than two moving violations in the past three years and no DUI or DWI citations in the last five years, and must undergo medical exams and drug tests from the state Department of Transportation.

    National College

    • National College in Memphis provides diplomas, associate degrees, and bachelor degrees in business, computer technology, medical office assistant, surgical technology and surgical technology. The campus features several classrooms, computer labs, a surgical suite and medical labs.

      Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED. Individuals with previous college credit must have an overall grade point average of 2.5. Admissions staff determines how many credits are transferrable. Prospective medical training students need to undergo medical examinations and drug tests, and must pass criminal background checks.

      Applicants must meet with admissions staff or arrange telephone interviews. After prospective students have interviews, they can submit their applications. This college offers financial assistance to qualified students, including scholarships and work study.

    The River School

    • The River School prepares students for maritime careers and licensing. Instructors include professionals who have worked for the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Merchant Marine and other maritime industries.

      Licensing courses help students gain certification to work as navigators, vessel pilots and engineers. Other programs train people to work with river radar, maritime security, tank-barge fire safety, and personal survival and river rescue. Application packets include the forms needed to apply for specific maritime licenses and contact information for application consultations.

      Prospective students need valid Transportation Workers Identification Cards or evidence that they've applied for a TWIC, three character references, criminal background information, proof of physical examinations, and maritime work and training documentation.
