HVAC Training in Atlanta

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technology refers to the complex mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and appliances that control temperature and humidity. HVAC technicians install, maintain and correct heating and cooling technology in both residential and industrial settings.
  1. Schools

    • There is currently only one school in Atlanta, Georgia that offers training in HVAC technology. The Atlanta Technical College offers both a certificate and a diploma in air conditioning technology. Training is also available at Gwinnett Technical College in nearby Lawrenceville, which is about 25 miles outside of Atlanta. It offers certificates in air conditioning electrical systems, air conditioning system maintenance, photovoltaic systems installation, and repair and refrigeration system service. Diploma programs in air conditioning technology and electrical construction and maintenance are also available.

    Curriculum

    • HVAC training involves both theoretical coursework and practical hands-on instruction. Course topics include refrigeration principles, electrical motors and components, electrical systems and installation, industrial safety, air conditioning principles and maintenance, air conditioning systems and installation, gas heating, and heat pumps. Diploma programs also include general education coursework in math, English and interpersonal relations.

    Prospects

    • The U.S. Bureau of Labor finds that employment of professionally trained heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers will increase by at least 28 percent through to 2018. As of 2010, the average wage of an HVAC technician was $19.08.
