Requirements to Advance from LPN to RN?

There are two commonly known types of nurses, the licensed practical nurse and the registered nurse. An LPN completes one year of study before beginning a job. An RN has completed two years of nursing school. To advance from an LPN to an RN, more courses must be completed through online courses, an associate's degree course of study or an accelerated course of study. The LPN can choose the one that best fits his schedule and job history.
  1. Online Courses

    • There are various online college courses that provide a LPN to RN degree in one calendar year. Some also give credit for clinical experiences already completed. Online courses can be taken at the LPNs convenience with many courses having a course syllabus and assignment due dates given at the beginning of the semester. The LPN can complete the coursework around her schedule.

    Accelerated Programs

    • An LPN who has worked at least two years in a clinical setting has the option of applying for an accelerated RN program. The NCLEX Registered Nurse Exam offers class credit for those who already have clinical experience and have completed necessary coursework while becoming LPNs.

    Associate's Degree in Nursing

    • LPNs who wish to obtain their RN license must study the same two-year nursing program in college as the RN. Although an LPN has completed a year of schooling, takes many of the same classes as RNs and completes clinical, on-the-job training like an RN, the RN takes many other classes as well.
