Technical schools, community colleges and some universities offer a CDA program. You can expect to take four semesters of classes in the process to obtain the required 120 hours of study for the CDA program. Some programs offer distance learning.
Make sure the program you choose is accredited by the Council for Professional Recognition, which administers the CDA assessment.
You must be 18 and have a high school diploma or GED to enroll in a CDA program. Most states provide need-based financial aid.
Organizations such as Head Start and U.S. Army Child and Family Services sponsor employees who are working toward a CDA. After clocking 120 hours of work at an established day care, you send an official letter or sponsor-written document to the Council of Professional Recognition for CDA approval.
If you’re planning on starting your own day care after you obtain your CDA, you will need to obtain licensure with your state to run a business. Common requirements include building safety, health and sanitation checks, and age-appropriate lesson plans and schedules.
