When was the first university invented?

There's no single inventor of universities, and the concept evolved gradually. However, the University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in Fez, Morocco in 859 CE, is generally considered the oldest existing and continuously operating educational institution in the world that meets the definition of a university.
