How to Do an Application for a Japanese Government Scholarship

The Japanese Government or Monbukagakusho offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to study in Japan. These scholarships are available to students in seven different categories to include Young Leaders' Program, special training, technology, Japanese studies, undergraduates, teacher training and research students. There are three methods of application for the Monbukagakusho scholarships to include embassy recommendation, university recommendation and domestic selection. The domestic selection and university recommendation process does not require any application process. These scholarships are awarded to individuals based on extraordinary recognized performance.

      Read the descriptions of each of the seven Japanese government scholarship programs. Determine the appropriate category to which you should apply.

      Find the application forms that apply to your category on the forms page as well as the appropriate application period. Download all of the forms in the appropriate category in either Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF format. Forms will include the application guideline, application form, recommendation form and certificate of health. Other forms will include the majors and related subjects for fields of study, majors and related key terms for fields of study, field of study and study program and application form attachment.

      Review the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship for the application guideline form. Determine if you meet the criteria and are able to abide by the regulations provided in the document.

      Complete the Application for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship. You will need to enter your full name and gender as well as nationality, date of birth, enrollment status, contact information and educational background in the appropriate spaces. Attach your photo in the specified area.

      Enter your full name on the top of the Monbukagakusho: MEXT Scholarship Recommendation Form. Give the form and an envelope marked "Confidential" to an individual who agreed to provide you with a recommendation. Have the recommending individual complete the form, put the completed form in the envelope and seal the envelope before giving it back to you.

      Make an appointment with your health care practitioner. Attend the appointment. The practitioner will need to give you a complete physical, run laboratory tests and review your medical history. Have the practitioner complete the form in its entirety and provide their recommendation.

      Complete the majors and related subjects for fields of study, majors and related key terms for fields of study, field of study and study program and application form attachment if applicable to your application area.

      Copy all completed forms, except for the sealed recommendation letter. Submit copies of transcripts, diplomas and work as applicable to your category.

      Submit the application packet containing the original of every form to the Japanese embassy or Consulate General closes to you before the application deadline.
