How to Be Confident With My English

English is one of the most challenging languages to master. Learning when to use "to," "two" or "too," or the difference between "who'" and "whom," or when to use "beside" or "besides" requires hours of intense study and practice. Even though you might not yet sound like someone born and raised speaking the language, congratulate yourself on how far you've come. And remember that practice makes perfect; keep working at it and your skill level will undoubtedly improve. Boost your confidence by tutoring peers with less English skills than you.

Instructions

    • 1

Immerse yourself in the English language. Read books, watch television shows, movies and plays in English. The more you hear the language, the better you'll understand how and when to use common words and phrases and how the language is pronounced. English-speaking children learn the language automatically just from hearing it all around them. Watch television shows and read books geared toward teaching young English speaking children how to read, write and talk. The better you get, the more your confidence will grow.

    • 2

Practice speaking English every chance you get, whether at school, at work or speaking to family and friends. When you speak in your native language, ask yourself constantly, "How would I say that in English?"

    • 3

Watch yourself speak English in the mirror. Get comfortable with the way you look speaking the language, and practice changing anything you don't like. If you're uncomfortable making up things to say to yourself, just read your lessons aloud.

    • 4

Use confident body language while you speak English. Even if you've having trouble pronouncing words or remembering phrases, don't slouch, fidget or keep your head down. Speak in a natural, conversational tone; keep your back and head straight, and your chin up. If you're in a relaxed setting, lace your hands behind your head and put your feet up. Train your body into feeling in control.

    • 5

Find a language buddy who speaks fluent English and wants to learn your language. Have sessions where you take turns tutoring each other. Boost your confidence by knowing you have something valuable to teach, as well as something to learn.

    • 6

Speak confidently about your English ability. Instead of saying, "I'm no good at this," say "Every day I'm getting better."
