How to Find Help With Difficulty in Learning English

Learning a language can be intimidating, stressful and arduous, especially for adults. English is an especially difficult language to learn because the grammar rules admit many exceptions. Likewise, English vocabulary abounds with irregularities, partly because it draws from several European languages. In addition, the pronunciation of some letter sounds requires the tongue to flex muscles never used in the native language of many English learners. Neither is the pronunciation of English words consistent. These factors can be discouraging for someone who wishes to master the English language. However, resources are available to help you overcome the difficulties of learning English.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your college's English resource center, if you are a student. Most colleges have a center that offers help for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in the form of tutoring, workshops, handouts and even editing services. Sometimes these centers are called "international centers."

    • 2

Go to your local library. Libraries have lots of books for ESL learners that can be borrowed for free. Many libraries also offer English tutoring or conversation partners.

    • 3

Find a conversation partner. If you don't have a friend you can ask, your college's English center can set you up with one, or you can advertise for one in your local newspaper. Conversing with a native English speaker is vital to learning English. A conversation partner can correct your speaking mistakes and answer your questions about English. Conversing with someone also provides you with an opportunity to practice your pronunciation.

    • 4

Read popular English-language novels. Pick books that are at your level or a little easier, to encourage you to stick with them. If you choose something too advanced, you might become frustrated and give up. Reading engaging stories helps you acquire vocabulary naturally by deducing meaning from context, rather than through memorization.

    • 5

Watch popular English-language TV shows and movies. This helps improve your listening abilities, as you become more and more accustomed to hearing English words and eventually begin to differentiate among them more easily. You also learn how people speak English in everyday conversation.
