Master's Degrees in the Humanities

The field of humanities is an umbrella term that refers to all disciplines that primarily study the human condition. This includes anthropology, art history, literature, and classical and modern languages. Students of the humanities approach their subjects using analytical, critical and speculative methods of study, as opposed to the empirical methods used by students of sciences and math.
  1. University of Chicago

    • The University of Chicago Master of Arts Program allows students to design their own programs of study based on their own research and professional interests. However, it also offers four prefabricated paths of study designed for students whose research and study lay in the areas of Cinema and Media Studies, Classical Languages, Cultural Policy Studies or Creative Writing. Unlike other M.F.A. Creative Writing programs, the U of Chicago's Master's Creative Writing program encourages students to develop their own writing in the context of intensive study of literature, music, art history or another area of their choosing.

    University of Texas: Dallas

    • The Master of Arts degree program offered by the University of Texas at Dallas also provides students with the chance to customize their interdisciplinary degree programs based on their specific area of study. Students may pursue a general humanities degree, or they may concentrate in one of three areas: Aesthetic Studies (which concentrates on the visual and performing arts, as well as creative writing and art history), History of Ideas (which concentrates on history and philosophy), and Study of Literature (which concentrates on language, rhetoric and of course literature). All degree candidates must choose a professional degree path or a research degree path, which requires that students defend a thesis and demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language.

    New York University

    • New York University's John W. Draper Interdisciplinary Master's Program in Humanities and Social Thought is founded on the belief that an intellectual endeavor is best served through a fully interdisciplinary approach. It draws on the resources of over 500 faculty members over 40 departments, and its curriculum is organized around six areas of inquiry: Art Worlds, The City, Gender Politics, Global Histories, Literary Cultures and Science Studies.
