How to Write a Statement of Legal Residence

When applying to a university, you will be asked to complete a statement of residence as part of your student application. You must answer all the questions to avoid delaying or jeopardizing your application. Using the information you provide on this form, the university will determine your resident or nonresident classification for the purpose of your tuition and fees. You must submit the form by the required date. Check whether an online submission is required, and photocopy any additional forms required as part of the application.

      Complete the details on your name, address, date of birth and date of entering the state, if you were born elsewhere. Give the details of your previous educational establishments. Complete the section on your financial affairs. You will be asked for details from your tax returns, bank accounts and loans. If you are under 24, you may have to give details on your parents' employment and finances.

      Include your student identity number in the space provided. Write only the last four digits of any social security numbers given and of your bank account number, credit and debit cards and drivers' license, as requested. You may also be asked for your vehicle registration number. If you do not currently own a vehicle, you may need to include a statement to this effect.

      Prepare any additional documents. Check the directions given with the form. For example, you will need to provide travel documents if you have entered the state within the last couple years. You will need to provide proof of entering the state, such as a copy of travel tickets. To be a legal resident of a state, you must also be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or hold a valid non-immigrant visa.
