How to Complete a Statement of Legal Residence

College isn't cheap and the costs are rising every year. According to the Rocklin Herald, between 2001 and 2011, higher education costs have increased an average of 4.5 to 7.5 percent annually, compared to the rate of 1 to 5.5 percent for overall inflation during the same period. One way to save your wallet and get the education you want for less is to fill out a Statement of Legal Residence. It proves that you are a resident in the area where you're going to school, making you eligible for a lower tuition available to in-state students.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the form in black ink. Write your residential information, using the address you intend to claim is your legal residence. Include your name, birthday and Social Security number.

    • 2

Check the box indicating whether you want to be considered a resident of the state your school is in. If you don't intend to apply for in-state tuition, you can simply say no, sign the form and send it in.

    • 3

Write down the dates you've been physically residing in the state where your college is located. If you were merely visiting, it doesn't count. You should write down the dates during which you considered it your residence.

    • 4

Write down information about your financial support. If your parents pay your bills, say so. If you wish to claim legal residence and are under the age of 24, you should prove that your financial support comes either from people in in the state you're filing in or from yourself. Show whether you've filed taxes in that state and whether you've held a job there.

    • 5

Write down information about your marital status, bank accounts, military service, vehicle and voter registration. Having a car registered in the state where you're claiming legal residence is one way to prove residency.

    • 6

Write down all the same information about your parents if you're under the age of 24 and not married. Include the car registrations, where they claim to be residents and their work information.

    • 7

Sign and date the form. Turn it in by the deadline imposed by your college.
