How to Prepare an Excellent Personal Statement

Aside from filling out the college application, gathering your Scholastic Assessment Test scores and applying for financial aid, preparing your personal statement is another important part of selling yourself to college admissions directors. Your essay should be honest, reflective and at times humorous, but in good taste. You should work on the essay at least three weeks before the application deadline so that you'll have enough time to proofread and correct your mistakes.

Talk about significant moments which inspired you to apply to college. For example, if you and your family were homeless due to a parent's job loss and you became the sole breadwinner through a full-time job, mention how this experience inspired you to become an entrepreneur and operate multiple businesses in your community so that low-income families can have better-paying jobs and climb out of poverty, and that you believe a college education would help you do this.

Discuss why you're choosing this particular college. If through your research you found out that the University of Kentucky offers a comprehensive English degree program and that a large percentage of the program's graduates go on to journalism and teaching careers, state that you believe that this university best suits your academic and long-term goals for these reasons.

Proofread your personal statement. If you need assistance with this, meet with your guidance counselor or English teacher and let her review it for any errors you may have missed. Then revise the personal statement at least a week before the application deadline.
