How to Write a Personal Statement for an Admission's Application

Getting into a college or graduate school can be a difficult if not lengthy process. Colleges may require the simplest of admission applications or a lengthy essay. Some colleges prefer the personal statement, which you write in addition to your admissions application and will reflect who you are outside of the general questions on the admission form. This is a chance for you to show what separates you from the rest of the applicants and why you are a good candidate for that school.

Decide what it is you want to share in your application. This includes anything that is unique about you--your accomplishments, goals, talents, special skills and experiences.

    • 2

Answer any direct questions that the application gives you. Some schools will require you to answer one or a series of questions.

    • 3

Write the first paragraph, making it interesting enough to pull the reader in. Be sure to name the school/degree/program you are trying to get into. This paragraph should help outline what it is you want to express throughout the statement.

    • 4

Write the content of the essay by supporting what you have said in the opening paragraph. Be specific with your examples.

    • 5

Conclude by bringing together what you have been saying throughout the statement. Restate your desire to get into the college or program. You also might want to illustrate why you have chosen the college or program.

    • 6

Put your statement through a spelling and grammar checker. Also, read over the document yourself very carefully. Sometimes word processing programs miss little details. You may want to have someone proofread your statement for you. Correct any errors and create your final draft.
