How to Write a University Personal Statement for Architecture

Personal statements are a central item in any application for a college architecture program. They allow for personal expression, important information about qualifications and provide applicants a chance to sell themselves, on paper, to the school of their choice. All of these items must be addressed in a personal statement as well as your personal investment, and interest in, architecture. Work experience and an educational background in math and science are also central items to discuss in the personal statement.

Instructions

    • 1

Compile a list of your achievements, experience and educational background to get ideas flowing about the general direction you wish to take your personal statement.

    • 2

Research the university and its architecture program. Outline why you would be a good fit for the program and the aspects of the university that appeal to you.

    • 3

Answer any specific questions provided by the university. Many schools provide a few questions they would like to see answered in personal statements.

    • 4

Gather all of your information and make an outline of your personal statement.

    • 5

Start the personal statement with an interesting fact or story about yourself. Fill the body of the statement with information about your accomplishments, experience and goals. Conclude the statement by summarizing the central points and an explanation of why you would make an excellent architecture student. These statements will vary in length, depending on the school, but will generally be about 500 words.
